CBS 8 San Diego recently featured MiraCosta College’s Roots of Justice program, highlighting how a small garden creates big change for students impacted by incarceration and systemic barriers.
The Roots of Justice garden offers more than fresh produce. For many students, it’s a place to heal, rebuild, and reconnect. Participants are paid for their work, which allows them to focus on their mental health while gaining hands-on experience and leadership skills.
Ricardo Sanchez, one of the program’s student leads, shared how the garden helped him find stability after years of incarceration, homelessness, and addiction. Through the garden, he found peace and a path forward.
The program also hosts mindfulness circles open to the broader campus community. Supported by mental health staff, these sessions give students space to reflect, connect with nature, and support one another.
Backed by grant funding, Roots of Justice continues to grow and reach more students. For those involved, the garden is more than a job. It’s a fresh start and a reminder that they matter.
